Your window into the past....

These pictures are from the Kirklees Photographic Collection which includes glass plates, celluloid negatives, lantern slides, postcards and original prints and comprises the work of local photographers and the Huddersfield Daily Examiner. Currently about 55,000 photographs have been digitised and can be viewed on easy use, touch screen computers in Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Cleckheaton and Holmfirth libraries.

Recently, a large collection of photographs telling the story of Brook Motors have been added and some large format negatives showing the products of Thomas Broadbent & Sons have been scanned. Whilst most of the photographs are of local workplaces, street scenes, landscapes and people, some of the photographers whose work is represented in the collections, took pictures outside the area.

Often the Community History Service's knowledge about each picture is limited and they would welcome additional information which can be included in their database. Altogether, there are more than 200,000 pictures in the archive and they hope, over time, to get them all on the system. In the long term, they would like to make them even more widely available by putting them on the internet.

The Community History Service looks after this important photographic archive along with the museum collections, making them accessible to local people through exhibitions, events, publications and new technology. The service aims to bring people closer to the heritage of their community by working in partnership with school and community groups, businesses and individuals.

Laser prints of the photographs are available and better quality prints can be ordered from the Community History Service. You can contact them on community.history.service@kirklees.gov.uk
