This is the second time I have been to Jumbo in Huddersfield, the first with a group of friends, the second with my family.
I was shown to an area, up a few stairs, which seemed to go on for some distance, broken only by an area, which was “fenced off”. I didn’t get past this area on either visit.
The tables were close together, in a café style layout, they were clean and well set out with the usual cutlery.
The aim of the whole place is fast food and this meant several visits to the food area, which I will come to in a while.
On both occasions, once we were seated, an efficient waitress came to take a drinks order. I am a Cider drinker and asked for a pint of Cider, the first occasion there was no problem and the crisp cool drink was the perfect accompaniment to my meal unfortunately on the second occasion this was not available, and I was guided towards a Chinese Beer (Tsingtao or Tiger) at an expensive £2.30 per bottle.

My wife had wine and my children Diet Coke – all reasonably priced and available.

My final “complaint”……. The whole place was far too hot, no air conditioning, not even a breeze through the place. The installation of modern fans, which would compliment the excellent modern décor, would be a welcome addition.
On both occasions the whole place was very busy with a cross section of diners.
Now to the best part – the food.
Dim Sum / Starters of Prawn Toast, deep fried wan tons (could have slightly more filling) Sea Weed, Standard Spare Ribs and Ginger and Spring onion Spare Ribs, Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings.

Soups - 3 Different types plus Chinese Congee a rice based soup which you add many different “bits” Spring onions, soy sauce etc (Very Authentic) I worked in China for many weeks and it was on most “breakfast” menus.

Mains – Before you get stuck into the varied mains – search out the duck pancakes. Soft pancakes, mountains of finely shredded duck and hoi sin sauce – Only missing was the cucumber and spring onions (not a drawback at all)

Several sections of mains – Don’t miss the stuffed mushrooms – if you like mushrooms these are the Dogs wotsits firm slightly spicy and to die for. Chicken in batter with options of Curry lemon or Sweet and sour sauces. Prawns – Large peeled and expertly cooked in Garlic and chillies again not HOT but oh so tasty.

There were also regional variations, which included mixed seafood, giant mussels, and shredded beef all in delicious sauces. There were slightly odd but still mouth watering dished such as beef in red wine – tender and succulent. The traditional Chinese Chicken curry was there with the tenderest tastiest white chicken you can imagine.

I am not one for the vegetarian menu but it looked superb as did most of the food on offer, I was persuaded to try the mushrooms (a different version) and they were equally satisfying.

Desert – If you still have space there were many different fruits, cheesecakes, ice creams etc – all as tasty, I am led to believe, as the mains and the Dim sums.

The bill came and what a pleasant surprise - £34.50 and this including the very expensive Chinese Beer…..

Various combinations of prices and times and none more expensive than £9.99 with a lunch for £4.99 – do not plan a hard afternoons work though.

Final comments – cool the place down a little and continue to serve the most excellent Chinese food.

I will certainly recommend the place and will be back very soon.

A little part of China in West Yorkshire
