Review A
A group of five of us went to Bradley's as a bit of a social away from
work. It was a Thursday evening, and obviously Huddersfield’s “girls’
night out” judging by the various groups of women there.
We ordered drinks at the bar while we waited for all of our party to
arrive, and were then shown to our table and given menus. We all decided
to have the Prime Time special, which costs £16.95 for three courses
including a half-bottle of wine (£14.95 without wine). There are five or
six choices for each course, so no one felt limited at all, and equally
there is no time limit for the menu during the week.
Great minds must think alike, because three of us ordered the same
starter, a chicken, cherry tomato and olive salad which came in an
unusual tilted bowl, and was lovely. The other starter chosen was a
basil and red pepper tart which was described as extremely nice, with an
onion drizzle setting the flavours off nicely.
We managed a bit more variety for our main courses, two of us having a
salmon fillet in a lovely lemon and herb sauce in which the flavours
were perfectly balanced. One of our party ordered steak, which arrived
cooked exactly as she had ordered. The only small complaint one of us
had was that her tortellini in a tomato and herb sauce was a little
salty for her taste – but she did say that she normally puts very little
salt in her food.
Our desserts were all deemed “delicious”. Two of us chose banana
cheesecake, two chose tiramisu with toffee sauce which was described as
“unusual but it really worked well”, and the chocoholic in our party had
a fabulously rich chocolate brownie with fudge sauce.
Coincidentally there was artwork by Dionne Swift, who is profiled in
this issue, on the walls. It certainly makes a nice change to see
original art rather than fairly run of the mill prints! Overall the
atmosphere was busy and cheerful and a thoroughly good time was had by
all.
Review B
Bradley’s Restaurant is situated in the town just off the ring road near
the railway station and within walking distance from the bus station.
Before it became a restaurant it was a Conservative club and before that
a mill. There is on street parking outside the restaurant or a car park
through an arch entrance to the rear of the building but it is not well
signed and we didn’t find out about the car park until we were inside.
Bradley’s does not have the usual sign letting people know it’s there
and when we drove down the street I found it hard to spot where exactly
Bradley’s was.
We chose to go on a Thursday and when I made our reservation I was asked
if I would like non-smoking or smoking, so I booked a table for two in
the non-smoking section for 8pm.
My first impression once inside the restaurant was that of not that
great, it was a bit dark and there was no one person to welcome us.
However once seated at our table I had a chance to look around the
restaurant. The tables were situated on different levels which added
character to the restaurant and the place started to grow on me in fact,
it reminded me of our trip last year to France and our many visits to
the local bistros, the warm friendly atmosphere, lighting not too bright
and candles on the tables. The staff were all very friendly and the
service was very efficient. It was also very busy for a Thursday night
although by the time we had left at 10pm it was starting to empty.
We chose a three-course meal with ½ a bottle of wine from the prime time
menu, which we thought was excellent value at £15.95 per person. They
have a varied menu, which also caters for vegetarians. I decided to go
for the fan of melon to start followed by the roast breast of chicken in
a satay sauce (I can taste it now) accompanied by a side salad and of
course save the best till last a desert of profiteer rolls. The portions
were just right and well presented. My partner chose the soup to start
followed by pan-fried rib-eye steak, mushroom, tomato and garlic jus he
chose to finish his meal of with the cheese selection, wow! He was
spoilt for choice.
During my visit to Bradley’s I visited the ladies, as I am sure most of
us do. They were clean and had fresh flowers and fresh towels to dry
your hands on. They had a separate disabled WC.
I enjoyed my evening at Bradley’s and so did my partner. There were no
children in the restaurant which we were quite glad of as we had left
two behind for a peaceful evening and I don’t think it is the type of
restaurant that is meant for children (well there are plenty others that
are) I think it would spoil the ambiance of the place and I didn’t spot
any special children’s menus.
To sum my experience of Bradley’s up I would say it was an enjoyable
night, in pleasant surrounds with friendly and efficient staff, great
food at very affordable prices. I would not hesitate to recommend
Bradley’s and will most definitely be going again. I can’t believe it
has been there for 10years and this was my first visit.
