We ate at the Shabab Restaurant on New Street,
Huddersfield. The location is perfectly central and is only a short walk
from both the bus station and train station. There is no parking
available at the restaurant however there is plenty of parking available
nearby.
From the outside it is incredibly deceiving. It looks both small and run
down but inside is a different story. It is beautifully decorated in an
authentic Indian design and the lighting is perfect to create a relaxed
atmosphere, perfect to unwind after a busy day. You can tell that a lot
of care and attention has been put into creating a restaurant with good
atmosphere. Gentle music was also playing which added to the ambience.
We were greeted as soon as we entered the premises. Our waiter was
smartly dressed and very polite to us. We were immediately presented
with menus and our drink order was taken.
The restaurant is very large however the tables are well spread out so
that you have some degree of privacy. We were blown away by the menu as
there was so much to choose from. I am a fan of Vegetarian Indian food
and the menu would not disappoint any vegetarian there was a great
selection available.
For started we chose a Shabab grill to share. This consisted of onion
pakoras, chicken, lamb and shish kebabs. It was served on a bed of
deliciously fried onions with side salad and sauces. The meat was so
tender and tasty. The dish was a perfect starter and could not have been
cooked any better.
For the main course I opted for a vegetable and lamb Jalfrazi. I could
not believe the generous amount of meat in my dish, it was tender and
cooked to perfection. The fresh herbs complimented the dish perfectly
and it was overall a good dish although slightly oily for my liking. In
future I would definitely ask for it to be cooked with less if any oil.
My partner opted for a Chicken tikka balti. Again the amount of meat was
very generous this dish was delicious. The chicken was perfectly
marinated and you could really taste fresh ginger throughout. We had a
double garlic naan to accompany our curries which was beautiful it was
fresh and tasty and more than enough for two people to share.
A buffet menu was also available which proved to be popular with our
fellow diners. The buffet offers a variety of Indian dishes and side
dishes at a reasonable price. This would also be suitable for
vegetarians. We ate quite early however there was still a reasonable
amount of people in the restaurant to say that it was so early.
The service was friendly and fast although we did not feel hurried in
the slightest and the waiter made an effort to make conversation with us
and was keen to know what we thought of the food.
The rest rooms were clean and accessible.
Our meal without drinks was only £16.95. If you eat before 7pm then one
main meal is discounted from the bill.
We would return to Shabab again as the food was good and the service was
excellent. I do not feel that Shabab would be suitable for diners with
disabilities as the restaurant is up a number of stairs. Shabab is
definitely worth a visit.
