Photographs of ‘Sporting Kirklees’ now on display in Queensgate Market

A wide range of images from local amateur photographers has been unveiled at Queensgate Market. A total of 50 images have been selected and printed onto the eight panels, 1 metre wide and 3 metres high, that are suspended from the massive roof space in the Grade 2 listed building.

The competition was launched after Christmas for the public to submit entries based on the sporting theme to celebrate Kirklees sport in the year of London 2012.

Entering the exhibition for the first time is Steve Horsfall from Dewsbury who has five images in the exhibition including football from Newsome High School and rugby Dewsbury Rams. ‘I am surprised and thrilled that my images have been selected and I have tried to show through my images the passion that sport at all levels is played in Kirklees. Whether at schoolboy, amateur or professional level, the competitive tradition between local teams is hopefully captured in my photographs.’

Benn Kefanke owner of Blacklight Gallery in Byram Arcade who had photos selected in last year exhibition, has another of his photos on display last year – an iconic image of the Galpharm Stadium entitled ‘Goal’.

An image from Heckmondwike Grammar School from local business Playrite who manufacture synthetic sports surfaces has been chosen for the exhibition. Lorna Duncanson, Marketing Manager said ‘we heard about the new photography exhibition at Queensgate Market through Twitter, and as a local company we wanted to get involved. I believe that events like this are great to help raise awareness and focus on the importance of sports in and around the Kirklees area.’

Entries were even received from Roger the Ram himself, the Dewsbury Rams Mascot, also known as Richard Hartley.

The images are now on display at Queensgate Market until November 2012 and capture moments from sport including rugby, football, netball, athletics, bowling, cycling, swimming and even dance.
