Visit Our Markets:
Market welcomes new businesses
Three interesting new businesses have opened at Queensgate Market in Huddersfield. Ka-Pow Comics, owned by Paul Thornton, opened in early July and stocks a wide range of American import comic books and graphic novels including the hugely popular Manga books.
Paul said: “We stock posters covering a wide range of geeky interests and are starting to see various international statues, action figures, apparel and assorted collectibles arriving on our shelves. So whether you want Japanese figures or Gold cast statues from the US, pop-in and see what we have to offer."
Entertainment for Less, owned by Denis O’Toole, sells a range of toys and DVDs including autographed reprints and superhero action figures. They also buy and sell used PS4 and X-Box games - perfect for changing and updating your collections.
Patchouli Haze is another business which has already expanded since opening earlier this year. It is one of the largest stockists in the area of Fairtrade, hippie, bo-ho and festival clothing. Owner Sandra Byatt said: “Customers coming in for clothing were asking about accessories so I quickly took the decision to expand the business, relocating close to the library entrance of the market.”
Cllr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Queensgate Market has changed dramatically in the past months with all sorts of new businesses opening up. Last year saw the opening of the tanning and teeth-whitening salon, tattoo and piercing studio, and the wrap bar to name just a few. The markets are really popular and we need to support these local businesses. The public response to the ironmongers being taken over and remaining open was overwhelming and we have lots more great businesses which need our custom.
“The market has lost some traditional stalls as the High Street has struggled but Queensgate Market is definitely bouncing back and showing how flexible the markets can be in adapting to changing retail trend. The rents are very competitive with some stalls as low as £200 per month.”
The management team at Queensgate hope to announce more new local business start-ups in the coming months as enquiries for stalls are on the increase.
