Visit Our Markets:
Local food campaign launched in Kirklees to encourage more people to buy locally produced food at local markets.
The ‘Live Love Local’ campaign raises awareness of local food on sale at the markets though a specially designed logo. The logo will be used by all market traders who sell produce which meets either of the following criteria:
• Fresh food grown or raised within 40 miles of the market at which the food is being sold (fresh fish can be from up to 100 miles).
• Secondary produce such as pies, cakes, and jams which are produced locally using mainly ingredients grown or raised within 40 miles of the market.
The ‘Live Love Local’ logo will be displayed against all local food so shoppers can make an informed choice to buy and support local producers when shopping and supporting their local markets. Market stalls selling more than 80% of total local produce will have their entire stall branded as ‘Live Love Local’.
The scheme is launched by Kirklees Council as part of its commitment to local food and to local shopping. The markets team at Kirklees felt the creation of this logo was vital in helping the public to appreciate and recognise the value of general markets in local food supply and the local economy.
Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for Regeneration, said: “Whilst farmers markets are firmly associated with local food, general markets often do not create the same link in the mind of the public. We manage two very successful accredited farmers markets in Kirklees, however the amount of local food being sold at our general markets across the district was not being recognised in the same way.”
“This new logo will highlight just how much local produce is for sale and how easy it is to buy this and support our local farmers and businesses. Local food represents over 95% of total produce on some of our traders stalls. This is something we must continue to highlight and support on all our markets. Local residents are keen to buy more local food and this scheme will help them to make simple changes to their shopping habits.”
