Queensgate Market News

Queensgate Market celebrated the 40th anniversary of its official opening

The event took place at 2.30pm on April 6, 1970 when the market was formally opened by Alderman Jack Sykes, Chairman of the Markets and Fairs Committee and the Mayor, Alderman Kenneth Brooke.

Forty years on – to the exact date and time - the market’s 40th birthday was officially recognised by the current Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Julie Stewart-Turner who unveiled a commemorative plaque inside the market at 2.30pm in the Peel Street / Piazza corner of the market, next to the former Police Station crest, and blew out the candles on the giant 40th birthday cake.

The event was also marked with an exhibition of photographs capturing the building and the opening of the market which was on display near the plaque.

Cllr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Queensgate Market is a valuable part of our town centre, home to 80 small businesses, many of which are locally owned and employ many of our local residents. Whilst the market did feel the impact of the credit crunch we are definitely on the up as new stores have opened and are opening in the coming weeks including some expansions from existing traders. New signs have been installed ready for the market’s birthday, and there are more plans afoot for the rest of the year.”

Huddersfield Gem offered free tours of public areas and parts usually closed to the public in the market hall in support of Kirklees Council's Queensgate birthday party plans.
