Top names from the fields of business, sport, the arts and academia are among the recipients of honorary awards

Top names from the fields of business, sport, the arts and academia are among the recipients of honorary awards that will be attending the University of Huddersfield’s November Awards Ceremonies on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 of November.

They include:

·High profile entrepreneur Theo Paphitis, who will become an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration. Theo is one of the UK’s most famous businessmen. His senior management expertise spans finance, property, retailing and consumer goods. He also stars in the highly popular BBC series Dragons’ Den.

Cyprus-born Theo moved to England in the 1960s. His formal working career started as a junior clerk with Lloyds of London before moving into retail at the age of 18. He then moved into property and corporate finance, setting up his own company aged just 23. He was Chairman of Millwall Football Club for eight years, taking the club out of administration and into the Championship League and to the FA Cup Final. Theo has advised many young entrepreneurs and invested in several innovative businesses and brands. The Paphitis Charitable Trust distributes all of his fees from TV appearances, speeches and his book to causes close to his heart and charities associated with children.


Professional footballer Andrew Booth, who will receive an Honorary Fellowship. Andrew has been one of Huddersfield’s favourite sporting icons for nearly two decades. Signed on schoolboy forms for Huddersfield Town, Andy was quickly given a full professional contract and made his Football League debut as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Fulham on 10 March, 1992.


He scored the first of more than 140 senior-competition goals for the club in a 2-2 draw at Blackpool the following November and, within a year, was the club’s established centre forward. After helping the club reach the Autoglass Trophy Final at Wembley in 1994, he was part of the team which won promotion through the play-offs, again at Wembley, the following year.
